China tops the world for most Internet users

Saturday, April 26th, 2008

China has moved past the U.S. to become the world’s largest group of Internet users. Over 221 million Chinese currently use the Internet, which is up over 10 million from last year.

“Despite a rapidly increasing Internet population, the proportion of Internet users among the total population was still lower than the global average level.” said the Chinese Information Ministry”

As a whole 16-percent of China’s population are Internet users, compared to an average of 19.1-percent for the world’s total population. All things considers that is a lot of users especially considering the Chinese government heavily censors the net, using a complex system of filters as well as human monitors. Despite that, it is still used as tool by Chinese supporters outraged by the recent rise in anti-Chinese sentiments in the Western world as a result of China’s treatment of Tibet. Just last weekend ago a group of Chinese hackers were able to knock CNN’s website offline in protest of what they called the network’s anti-Chinese propaganda. The upcoming Olympic games in Beijing have also served to bring even more attention to the issue and has led to various protests by pro-Tibet supporters along the route of the Olympic torch relay.

3G iPhone in June 2008: It’s almost here, folks!

Saturday, April 26th, 2008

Apple 3G iPhone If analyst reports are to be believed, the 3G iPhone will be announced on June 9, the anticipated date of the Apple WWDC (Worldwide Developers Conference). Apart from the much-awaited 3G version of the phone, analysts predict a slew of updates to the Mac and ipod line-ups.

It appears that Apple iphone inventories are not keepking up with demand which is still strong - and the company could easily reach the 10 million mark. I’ll be honest for a bit here: I am not a huge fan of the iPhone, and I believe 10 million is a pretty low number. Reason? The excessive price. Well, that might soon change, with analysts expecting the price to drop to US $299 or $349 (it is currently priced at $399).

Star Wars R2-D2 Speaker Set

Saturday, April 26th, 2008

Just when you thought you had enough Star Wars paraphernalia, R2-D2 got together with R2-D1 to make sweet music as a speaker set.

You get a two-droid set, R2-D2 and his red doppleganger R2-D1. Each features a flip-up head to reveal a speaker. Plug the stereo headphone style plug into your PC, ipod or spare Wookie for some droid-based sound. We won’t kid you, these speakers are not powered so their volume is limited by whatever audio input you give them. But don’t you want to help out a droid who’s down on his luck?

Gimmie!

Re-live The 80’s With The Cassette MP3 Player

Saturday, April 26th, 2008

It always fascinates me that you can take something, make it look old and it’s suddenly cool because it’s “retro.” Aside from the ability to create mix tapes, there wasn’t anything cool about the cassette tape that I ever saw. This Cassette MP3 player would probably be the closest thing to cool that the cassette tape will ever get.

What makes this device cool is that it can act as both a stand-alone mp3 player and as a cassette tape. If you actually still have a stereo that takes the old tapes, you can put this in and it will play just the same. It’ll set you back $40, which is a bit steep considering the fact that you’ll need to supply your own SD card to store the music.

TomTom updates 2nd edition Rider with essential components

Saturday, April 26th, 2008

The TomTom 2nd Edition Rider is a GPS for people who mostly use a motorcycle as their means of transportation. TomTom did not add a lot of key features present in their normal, automobile GPS models, and so, with this update comes many features missing in the 2nd Edition Rider.

Some of the main features included in this update are Map Share, the Help Me! menu, which is a safety feature to try and help when needed, map guarantees, and Tele Atlas maps which cover Western and Eastern Europe, and they come pre-installed. Another cool update is that you can find out the stats of your trip, such as average and max speeds, total distance traveled, as well as the distance from the starting point. If you plan on buying a 2nd Edition Rider now, it would come with all of these new features. However, you might be wondering if you can still get these features if you already own this GPS or the 1st Edition Rider. The answer is yes, all you have to do is download the software from TomTom Home, and it’s free.

It it set to sell in early May, and the UK and Ireland model will sell for 349.99 Euros, and the European version will cost 399.99 Euros. It seems like it was about time TomTom added these features to this GPS, because it wasn’t fair for the bikers, as they missed out on a lot of key features.

LG LTM9000

Saturday, April 26th, 2008

Every once in a while, some device comes along that makes me say, “That is so obvious! I should have thought of that. Then I could have got rich off of the patent”.

Such is the case with LG’s LTM9000, which is simply a microwave oven with a toaster attached to it. Considering that most of us use the microwave and the toaster in the same room, it really isn’t rocket science to put the two together. I’m sure you’re probably wondering why you didn’t think of such an obvious improvement to the kitchen.

The LG LTM9000 has 900 watts of power for the microwave, and about 800 watts for the toaster. The toaster can toast at nine levels, which will hopefully be better than what most toasters can do. I don’t know about you, but my toaster has two settings: barely warm and charcoal black.

This product comes in “high-tech stainless steel” and is available in white or black for about $140.

I suppose that while we are talking about obvious improvements to the kitchen, why don’t we just clump all the kitchen appliances together. I see a device that puts together the microwave, toaster, blender, breadmaker, chopper, and anything else that I didn’t think of. Yes, I definitely see a future in kitchen appliances. Maybe I had better start building it now.
